On Thursday, the Biden administration issued a multitude of documents expressing the White House’s support for transgender Americans – including transgender children.  Several of the documents released by the White House went so far as to advocate for permanent bodily changes and surgeries for gender-confused youth.  The group of memos was released by the White House and several federal departments to commemorate International Transgender Day of Visibility and announce new steps that the Biden administration is taking to support transgender individuals.

Early Thursday morning, the White House published a fact sheet outlining the steps that the Biden administration has taken to promote transgender rights.  Included in the fact sheet was a section devoted to “providing resources for transgender kids and their families.”

These resources provided by the White House included directives from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Office of Population Affairs, and The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, all of which affirmed transgender youths.

The Office of Population Affairs (OPA) released a directive stating that “for transgender and nonbinary children and adolescents, early gender-affirming care is crucial to overall health and well-bring as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the healthcare system.”

It went on to explain that parents and caregivers should indulge children confused about their gender.  At any stage, the OPA recommends “adopting gender-affirming hairstyles, clothing, name, gender pronouns, and restrooms and other facilities.”

During adolescence, the OPA endorses the potential introduction of puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and even gender-affirming surgeries for children who don’t identify with their biological sex.

Meanwhile, The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) released a memo titled “Gender-Affirming Care Is Trauma-Informed Care.”  In it, the network argues that gender-affirming care should be the standard, even going so far as to advocate for “evidence-based interventions such as puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones.”

Moreover, the NCTSN memo backhandedly rebuked legislation recently passed in states such as Florida, Texas, and Alabama curbing the teaching of LGBT issues in primary school classrooms and preventing biological males from participating in women’s sports.

“Gender-affirming care also includes access to opportunities that all children should have, such as playing team sports, safely using bathrooms in their schools and other public places, and positive relationships with supportive adults,” per the NCTSN document.

President Biden himself voiced his support for transgender children in a video posted to Twitter.  Biden told transgender children and parents of transgender kids that “You’re so brave.  You belong.  And we have your back.”

Biden further appealed to parents, telling them that “affirming your child’s identity” is one of the most important actions they can take to support their transgender child.  Biden then decried state legislation limiting transgender athletes’ ability to participate in sporting events as “simply wrong” and “hateful.”

While political figures such as President Biden are content to affirm children in their gender confusion, Republican lawmakers have largely forwarded a different perspective.  For instance, in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott recently called gender reassignment surgeries and other such treatments “child abuse.”

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill preventing school officials from holding discussions on sensitive topics related to LGBT issues in primary grade levels.  Furthermore, a number of states under Republican leadership have introduced legislation geared towards preventing biologically male athletes from participating in women’s sports.

In general, Republicans reason that children are too young to make permanent and life-altering decisions pertaining to their gender.  Indeed, as many Republicans point out, research indicates that a sizable percentage of children who undergo gender reassignment surgeries later regret that decision.
